Saint Kitts and Nevis: Foreign Relations

Saint Kitts and Nevis, the smallest sovereign state in the Western Hemisphere by land area and population, maintains an active foreign policy centered on regional integration and multilateral diplomacy. As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organization of American States (OAS), and the United Nations, the twin-island federation takes part in efforts on collective security, sustainable development, and economic cooperation among Caribbean and hemispheric partners. It has established formal diplomatic relations with more than 140 countries, reflecting a deliberate strategy of building a broad network of alliances beyond its immediate region.

The federation's relationship with the United States remains among its most consequential foreign partnerships. As of 2026, the two governments cooperate closely on regional security and combating transnational crime; U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Terrance Drew in February 2026 to discuss these priorities, and a bilateral memorandum of understanding has facilitated the transfer of CARICOM nationals from the United States to Saint Kitts and Nevis. Unlike most Caribbean states, Saint Kitts and Nevis maintains formal diplomatic recognition of Taiwan rather than the People's Republic of China, a position it has held since establishing relations with Taipei in 1983.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has also taken on leadership roles within regional bodies. As of 2026, it chairs the Association of Caribbean States' Special Committee on Trade Development and External Economic Relations, presenting the committee's findings at the organization's ministerial council in Panama. The country continues to draw on longstanding ties with the United Kingdom and Canada, alongside its Commonwealth membership and fellow CARICOM states, to advance economic and security cooperation across the wider Caribbean.
