Saint Kitts and Nevis uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$), the shared currency of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union, whose other members are Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the British territories of Anguilla and Montserrat. The Eastern Caribbean dollar was introduced in 1965 as the successor to the British West Indies dollar, and as of 2026 it remains pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate of EC$2.70 to US$1, a rate that has held since July 1976.
Monetary policy for the currency union is set not by a national central bank but by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), which is headquartered in Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and which licenses and supervises commercial banks across all eight members of the union. Because the long-standing peg leaves little room for an independent interest rate or exchange rate policy, the ECCB's role centers on maintaining the foreign reserve backing that supports the fixed rate, and the US dollar circulates widely alongside the EC dollar in everyday commerce.
Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Nevis in particular, built a sizable offshore banking and financial services sector beginning in the 1980s, drawing on light local regulation and strict confidentiality rules. That sector has contracted substantially since the early 2000s, as international pressure over money laundering and tax transparency led to tighter licensing requirements and the closure of a number of offshore banks. Nonbank financial services are now supervised domestically by the Financial Services Regulatory Commission, which maintains separate St. Kitts and Nevis branches, while the ECCB continues to oversee licensed commercial banks. As of 2026, the domestic banking system remains small and concentrated, with the US dollar still serving as a de facto parallel currency for many private transactions.
