Saint Kitts & Nevis: Politics and Governance

Saint Kitts and Nevis is a federal parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, with the British monarch as head of state represented locally by a Governor-General. The prime minister leads the government, and a unicameral National Assembly holds legislative power, while Nevis maintains its own island assembly and premier.

The country has maintained stable democratic governance since independence, with power alternating between major political parties. Nevis has held referendums on secession from the federation, most notably in 1998, though the effort narrowly failed to reach the required two-thirds threshold.
