Saint Kitts and Nevis: Political Parties & Elections

Saint Kitts and Nevis operates as a parliamentary democracy in which political competition has long been shaped by a handful of parties rooted in the mid-twentieth-century labor movement. The St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, founded in 1932 as the St Kitts Workers' League, is among the oldest active political organizations in the English-speaking Caribbean and built its early base among sugar plantation workers. Its principal rivals emerged later: the People's Action Movement formed in the 1960s as a more conservative counterweight, while Nevis developed its own distinct party, the Nevis Reformation Party, reflecting the smaller island's push for greater autonomy within the federation.

For much of the late twentieth century, elections in the federation swung between Labour and its opponents. The People's Action Movement won a majority of the directly elected seats in 1980 and again in 1984, governing in coalition with Nevis-based partners, before Labour returned to power in 1995 under Denzil Douglas and held office through four consecutive general elections. Voting has consistently centered on eleven directly elected seats in the National Assembly, divided between the two islands, with alliances between St Kitts-based and Nevis-based parties often determining which side forms a government.

The political landscape shifted again in the 2010s. In the 2015 general election, Labour's long tenure ended when Team Unity, an alliance of three smaller parties led by Timothy Harris, took power. That coalition fractured by 2022, triggering an early general election in which the St Kitts-Nevis Labour Party won a clear majority under Dr. Terrance Drew, a pattern that illustrates how coalition instability has remained a recurring feature of the country's electoral politics.
