Suriname: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Suriname's economy is dominated by natural resource extraction, particularly bauxite and gold mining, which together with oil production account for the majority of export earnings and government revenue. Agriculture, including rice and banana cultivation, and forestry also contribute to the economy, though the country's small population and limited infrastructure constrain broader industrial diversification. Gross domestic product is estimated at roughly 3.7 billion US dollars.

Suriname's principal trading partners include the United States, the Netherlands, and neighboring Caribbean and South American economies, reflecting both its colonial ties and its membership in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Significant offshore oil discoveries in the early 2020s are expected to transform the country's economic outlook substantially, with production anticipated to begin generating major new revenue streams in the coming years, prompting government efforts to build fiscal frameworks for managing future petroleum wealth responsibly.
