Saint Vincent and the Grenadines runs one of the more pronounced trade deficits in the Eastern Caribbean, reflecting its small agricultural export base and heavy reliance on imported goods. As of 2023, the multi-island nation recorded total merchandise exports of about 41 million dollars against imports of roughly 456 million dollars, a gap of more than 415 million dollars. Export markets, based on the most recent detailed partner-level data from 2022, were led by Saint Lucia, the United States, Barbados, Dominica, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, while imports came primarily from the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, China, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
Bananas and other agricultural products, along with small exports of arrowroot starch and light manufactured goods, make up most of the country's limited export trade, while food, fuel, machinery, and construction materials dominate imports. This imbalance is common among the smaller members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and is offset mainly through tourism receipts, remittances, and financial services income rather than through merchandise trade.
As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the OECS, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines benefits from preferential access to regional markets, which explains the prominence of neighboring islands among its export destinations even as the United States remains its single largest trading partner overall. Diversifying beyond this narrow export base remains a long-standing goal of national economic policy.
