Saint Vincent & Grenadines: Politics and Governance

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth of Nations, with the British monarch as head of state represented locally by a Governor-General. Executive authority is exercised by a Prime Minister and Cabinet drawn from the elected House of Assembly, a unicameral legislature whose members are chosen through periodic general elections under a Westminster-style system. Political power has historically alternated between the Unity Labour Party and the New Democratic Party.

The country maintains a stable multiparty political tradition with regular, generally free and fair elections, and has avoided the sustained political violence seen in parts of the wider region. Contemporary political debate centers on economic diversification, disaster resilience following the 2021 La Soufriere volcanic eruption, and the country's evolving relationship with the Commonwealth, including ongoing discussion about transitioning to a republic and removing the British monarch as head of state.
