Saint Lucia: Politics and Governance

Saint Lucia is a parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth of Nations, with the British monarch represented locally by a Governor-General who serves a largely ceremonial role. Executive authority rests with the Prime Minister and Cabinet, drawn from the majority party in the bicameral Parliament, which consists of an elected House of Assembly and an appointed Senate.

Political life has historically been dominated by two parties, the Saint Lucia Labour Party and the United Workers Party, which have alternated in power through regular, competitive elections. The country's judiciary is part of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court system, and Saint Lucia participates actively in regional bodies such as CARICOM and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States.
