Saint Lucia is a volcanic island in the Windward Islands chain of the eastern Caribbean, lying between Martinique to the north and Saint Vincent to the south. Covering roughly 616 square kilometers, the island formed from volcanic activity long after much of the surrounding region had taken shape, giving it a mountainous, interior landscape quite different from the flatter coral and limestone islands elsewhere in the Caribbean. Its best-known landmarks are the Gros Piton and Petit Piton, twin volcanic peaks rising from the sea near the town of Soufrière, while Mount Gimie, in the central mountain range, is the island's highest point at about 950 meters.
Steep terrain shapes much of daily life on Saint Lucia, with numerous short rivers draining from the central highlands toward the coast and fertile valleys supporting banana and other crop farming between the ridgelines. The climate is tropical and humid, moderated by steady northeast trade winds that keep coastal temperatures fairly even through the year, while the mountain interior stays noticeably cooler. Rainfall is abundant, falling most heavily in the wetter months and reaching its highest totals in the rainforested mountains; hurricanes remain the island's most serious natural hazard, with storms including Hurricane Allen in 1980 and Hurricane Tomas in 2010 causing significant damage to agriculture.
Forests cover the majority of Saint Lucia's land area, and the island's natural resources include sandy beaches, mineral springs, and deposits of pumice tied to its volcanic origins; a geothermal field near Soufrière, often called a drive-in volcano, produces sulfurous hot springs that draw visitors. Only a small share of the island is given over to agriculture, concentrated in valley floors and lower slopes, and ongoing concerns include deforestation and soil erosion in the north. Saint Lucia's combination of rugged peaks, sheltered harbors, and volcanic features continues to define both its ecology and its appeal as a destination.
