Panama: History

Before European arrival, the Isthmus of Panama was inhabited by diverse Indigenous peoples, including the Guná, Emberá, and Ngäbe, who developed trade networks linking Mesoamerica and South America across the narrow land bridge.

Spanish explorers arrived in the early sixteenth century, and Panama became a key transit point for gold and silver shipped from Peru to Spain along the Camino Real. Panama declared independence from Spain in 1821 and joined Gran Colombia, remaining part of Colombia until it separated to form an independent republic in 1903.

The Panama Canal, completed in 1914 and operated by the United States for decades, dominated the nation's economy and politics until full transfer of control to Panama in 1999. Since then, Panama has expanded canal capacity and developed into a major regional financial and logistics hub.
