Guatemala's linguistic landscape reflects both its deep Mayan heritage and centuries of Spanish colonial influence. Spanish, the official language, is spoken by the great majority of the population as a first or second language, yet the country also recognizes twenty-two Mayan languages as national tongues under a 2003 language law, alongside the non-Mayan indigenous languages Xinca and Garifuna. K'iche' is the most widely spoken Mayan language, followed by Q'eqchi' and Kaqchikel, with speakers concentrated in the western, northern, and central highlands, while Spanish predominates in the southeast.
Religious life in Guatemala has undergone significant change since Spanish colonization introduced Roman Catholicism in the sixteenth century, supplanting pre-Columbian Maya religious practices centered on nature deities and astronomical observation. Protestant Christianity gained a foothold in the late nineteenth century after President Justo Rufino Barrios invited Presbyterian, Methodist, and Baptist missionaries, and it expanded further in the twentieth century with the arrival of Pentecostal denominations from the United States. Today Catholics and Protestants make up roughly comparable shares of the population, and Guatemala is often cited as the most heavily Protestant country in Latin America.
Rather than fully displacing indigenous belief, Catholic and Protestant practice in Guatemala frequently coexists with Maya spirituality. Many Indigenous Catholics, and some Indigenous Protestants, blend ancestral customs with Christian worship, a syncretism especially visible in the highlands and in communities such as Livingston. Contemporary Maya religious practice, known locally as costumbre, continues to be observed at mountains, caves, and archaeological sites, reflecting a cosmology that reveres natural phenomena and remains an enduring thread in Guatemala's cultural identity.
