Costa Rican art reflects the blending of the country's Indigenous, European, and African communities, expressed across painting, sculpture, dance, and traditional dress. Because Costa Rica developed as a distinct literary nation relatively late, its written literary tradition dates mainly to the final years of the nineteenth century; scholars typically divide the subsequent body of Costa Rican literature into five successive literary generations, each shaped by shifting social and political currents.
San José, the capital, functions as the country's cultural hub, home to a growing network of theaters and museums that support the performing and visual arts. Costa Rica's National Theatre remains among the country's most recognized cultural landmarks, and a range of smaller venues host music, dance, and dramatic performances throughout the year. Cultural festivals held in San José and other cities showcase both traditional and contemporary Costa Rican artistic expression.
Costa Rica maintains one of the more diverse and independent media environments in Central America, comprising national newspapers, television and radio broadcasters, public media, and a growing number of digital-only outlets. Six national daily newspapers, including La Nación, La Teja, Diario Extra, Al Día, and La Prensa Libre, publish alongside dozens of smaller nondaily papers; Grupo Nación remains the country's leading print and digital publisher. State-run SINART operates public television and radio, while outlets such as CRHoy have expanded the country's digital news presence. Long regarded as having one of the strongest press-freedom records in Latin America, Costa Rica's media sector has faced growing tension with political authorities in recent years.
