Colombia's economy has traditionally relied on the export of commodities such as petroleum, coal, coffee, and cut flowers, though recent decades have brought efforts toward greater diversification. As one of the largest economies in the Andean region, Colombia has pursued an outward-oriented trade policy since the 1990s, opening its markets through a series of bilateral and regional agreements. Trade remains a significant driver of national income, with commodity exports still accounting for a substantial share of foreign earnings.
As of 2025, the United States remained Colombia's largest single export market, absorbing roughly 30 percent of total exports between January and October, according to national statistics agency data. Non-mining-energy products, including agricultural and manufactured goods, made up about 65 percent of exports to the United States that year, while petroleum and other mining-energy products accounted for the remainder. On the import side, China supplied the largest share of Colombian imports, chiefly semiconductors and plastics, followed by the United States, a major source of refined fuel products, and Trinidad and Tobago, which primarily supplied liquefied natural gas and nitrogen fertilizers.
Colombia is a founding member of the Pacific Alliance, a regional integration bloc it formed with Chile, Mexico, and Peru, and holds associate-state status with the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). It also maintains free trade agreements with the United States, the European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Free Trade Association, and several Central American nations, including Panama, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, reflecting a trade strategy aimed at diversifying export markets beyond its traditional commodity base.
