Colombia is a unitary presidential republic with a president serving as head of state and government for a four-year term, and a bicameral Congress composed of the Senate and Chamber of Representatives, operating under the 1991 constitution.
Contemporary politics center on implementation of the 2016 peace accord, land reform, coca cultivation and counter-narcotics policy, and continuing efforts to address regional security challenges in areas affected by armed conflict.
