Antigua & Barbuda: Key Industries

by Strong Americas | Jul 31, 2026

Tourism is the backbone of Antigua and Barbuda's economy, generating the majority of national income and employing a large share of the workforce. The islands' warm climate, numerous beaches, and reputation as a yachting destination, highlighted by English Harbour's Nelson's Dockyard, draw visitors primarily from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with cruise ship arrivals and stay-over visitors together accounting for most of the country's foreign exchange earnings.

Financial services form the second-largest pillar of the economy, with offshore banking, insurance, and the government's Citizenship by Investment Programme contributing meaningfully to public revenue. This sector expanded significantly after independence in 1981, as successive governments sought to diversify the economy beyond agriculture and reduce dependence on a small number of export crops.

Manufacturing and agriculture play smaller but still notable roles in the economy. Light manufacturing includes enclave-type assembly operations producing bedding, electronic components, and handicrafts largely for export, while agriculture remains constrained by the islands' scarce fresh water and thin soils, with fishing, cotton, and small-scale vegetable and livestock production serving mostly domestic needs.
