Antigua and Barbuda: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Antigua and Barbuda's economy is heavily dependent on tourism, which accounts for a large share of GDP and employment, driven by the country's beaches, resorts, and yachting industry. Financial services, construction, and light manufacturing also contribute to the economy, while the government has promoted a Citizenship by Investment Programme as a source of foreign revenue.

The country uses the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, pegged to the US dollar, and is a member of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union. Agriculture plays a smaller role today than in the colonial sugar era, though some local farming persists. Antigua and Barbuda trades primarily with the United States, Canada, and other CARICOM nations, and remains vulnerable to hurricanes and global economic shocks given its small, tourism-dependent economy.
