Cuba: Culture and Society

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Cuba has a population of roughly 11 million, predominantly of mixed European, African, and Indigenous heritage, with Spanish as the official language. Roman Catholicism is the largest religious tradition, though Afro-Cuban syncretic faiths such as Santería are widely practiced alongside it, and the state has historically promoted secularism.

Cuban culture is renowned for its music and dance traditions, including son, salsa, rumba, and mambo, as well as its literary heritage exemplified by writers such as José Martí and Alejo Carpentier. Baseball holds a central place in national identity, and Cuban cigars and rum are recognized internationally. Despite economic hardship, Cuba maintains high literacy rates and a distinctive artistic and intellectual life shaped by decades of relative isolation from global markets.
