Belize: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Belize has a small, open economy driven primarily by tourism, agriculture, and services. The country's Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, along with its rainforests and Maya ruins, draws significant numbers of visitors each year. Agricultural exports including sugar, citrus, and bananas remain important sources of foreign exchange, alongside a growing offshore financial services sector.

The Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate. Belize is unique among Central American nations for its Caribbean cultural ties and membership in both CARICOM and the Central American Integration System, giving it a distinct economic and trade profile that bridges both regions. The country continues to work toward diversifying its economy while managing public debt and vulnerability to natural disasters.
