Suriname's trade partnerships are shaped by an economy built around extractive resources, particularly gold, which has for decades accounted for the large majority of the country's export earnings, alongside smaller contributions from crude oil, alumina, and agricultural goods such as rice, shrimp, and bananas. As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Suriname participates in a Caribbean trade framework even though its South American geography and Dutch colonial heritage give it closer historical ties to Europe than to most of its English-speaking neighbors.
As of 2022, World Bank trade data showed Switzerland as Suriname's leading export destination, receiving roughly half of total exports, a reflection of Switzerland's role as a global refining and trading hub for gold rather than a direct consumer market. The United Arab Emirates, another major gold-trading center, ranked second. Within the Western Hemisphere, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana were among Suriname's most significant regional export markets, underscoring ongoing commercial ties among CARICOM member states.
On the import side, the United States was Suriname's largest supplier as of 2022, followed by the Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago, and China, according to World Bank figures. Imports from Trinidad and Tobago have traditionally included refined petroleum products, reflecting that country's regional role as an energy exporter, while Dutch imports reflect Suriname's enduring economic and linguistic links to the Netherlands dating from the colonial period. As with any single-year trade snapshot, these rankings can shift notably given Suriname's reliance on a small number of high-value commodity exports.
