Canada: Language & Religion

English and French are Canada's two official languages at the federal level. Both languages hold equal status under the Official Languages Act, first passed in 1969. English is the majority language in most provinces, while French predominates in Quebec and is also an official language in New Brunswick, Canada's only officially bilingual province. Beyond English and French, Canada is home to dozens of Indigenous languages, including Cree, Inuktitut, and Ojibwe, though speaker numbers have declined over generations. Immigration has also made the country linguistically diverse, with Mandarin, Punjabi, and Tagalog widely spoken in major urban centers.

Christianity remains Canada's largest religious tradition, with the 2021 census recording 53.3 percent of the population, or roughly 19.3 million people, identifying as Christian. Roman Catholicism is the largest denomination, tracing its roots to French and Irish colonial settlement, alongside various Protestant traditions. Religious affiliation has shifted markedly in recent decades: the share of Canadians reporting no religious affiliation rose from 16.5 percent in 2001 to 23.9 percent in 2011 and 34.6 percent in 2021, reflecting a broader trend toward secularization, particularly in western provinces such as British Columbia.

Despite its Christian majority, Canada maintains a strong constitutional and cultural commitment to secularism and religious pluralism. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of religion and conscience, and growing immigrant communities practicing Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Judaism have added to the country's religious diversity, particularly in urban centers such as Toronto and Vancouver.
