Saint Vincent and the Grenadines: Foreign Relations

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines maintains an active foreign policy built on regional integration and broad multilateral engagement. The country is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), the Organization of American States (OAS), the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). This dense web of memberships has allowed the small island nation to punch above its weight diplomatically, including through periods of leadership within regional and hemispheric groupings.

The United States is a longstanding partner, with bilateral relations anchored in maritime law enforcement, an extradition treaty, and a mutual legal assistance treaty focused on countering narcotics trafficking and transnational crime. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has also benefited from the U.S. Caribbean Basin Initiative, which provides duty-free access to the U.S. market for many goods. As of 2026, under the government of Prime Minister Godwin Friday, who took office in November 2025, the country continues to draw on these frameworks while also engaging on regional security concerns, including instability linked to Venezuela.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is one of a small number of Caribbean states that maintains formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan rather than the People's Republic of China, a partnership marking 45 years as of August 2026. Following a November 2025 election that brought Godwin Friday and the New Democratic Party to power, the new government reaffirmed its commitment to Taiwan despite earlier speculation about a possible shift toward Beijing; Deputy Prime Minister St. Clair Leacock visited Taiwan in March 2026 to strengthen cooperation. As of 2026, the two governments continue to expand ties in areas such as agriculture, education, and infrastructure development.
