Uruguay: Politics and Governance

Uruguay is a presidential representative democratic republic in which the President serves as both head of state and head of government, elected to a five-year term with a bicameral General Assembly serving as the national legislature. The country's political system is built on a strong tradition of institutional stability and the rule of law, and Uruguay consistently ranks among the least corrupt and most democratic nations in Latin America according to international indices.

Political power has historically alternated among three major coalitions: the center-right Colorado Party, the conservative National Party (Blancos), and the left-wing Broad Front coalition, which governed for fifteen years beginning in 2005 before losing power in 2019. Uruguay's political culture emphasizes secularism, strong labor protections, and progressive social policy, and the country has pursued a generally pragmatic and independent foreign policy, maintaining close regional ties through Mercosur while cultivating broader international trade relationships.
