Uruguay: Economy and Trade

Uruguay has a small, open, high-income economy anchored in agriculture, particularly beef, soybean, and dairy exports, alongside a growing services sector that includes finance, information technology, and tourism. Gross domestic product is estimated at roughly 77 billion US dollars, and Uruguay is often cited for its strong institutional environment, favorable business climate, and comparatively equitable income distribution relative to regional peers.

Uruguay is a founding member of Mercosur, the South American trade bloc that also includes Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, and its principal trading partners include Brazil, China, and Argentina. The country has invested heavily in renewable energy, generating the vast majority of its electricity from wind, solar, hydroelectric, and biomass sources, and it has pursued economic diversification into technology and logistics services, leveraging its stable institutions and strategic location as a regional gateway.
