The United States has no official language at the federal level, though English functions as the de facto national language and is used in government, education, and media across the country. Spanish is the most widely spoken minority language, reflecting large Hispanic and Latino communities, particularly in the Southwest, Florida, and major urban centers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey, more than 430 languages are spoken or signed nationwide, including 177 languages indigenous to the United States or its territories, alongside languages introduced by immigrant communities such as Chinese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, and Portuguese.
Religious life in the United States has been shaped by the First Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1791, which prohibits the establishment of a state religion and guarantees the free exercise of religious belief. This constitutional framework fostered a highly pluralistic religious environment, distinguishing the United States from many nations with an official or historically dominant state church. Waves of immigration from Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa introduced a wide range of faith traditions, while religious minorities have generally been free to organize and worship without government interference.
Christianity remains the largest religious tradition in the country. The Pew Research Center's 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study found that 62 percent of American adults identified as Christian, including 40 percent Protestant and 19 percent Catholic, while 29 percent described themselves as religiously unaffiliated and 7 percent belonged to non-Christian faiths such as Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism. The unaffiliated share of the population, often called religious "nones," grew substantially in the early twenty-first century before leveling off in more recent years.
