United States: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

The United States has the largest economy in the world by nominal gross domestic product, estimated at roughly 27 trillion US dollars, driven by a highly diversified mix of services, technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and finance. Major economic sectors include information technology and software, healthcare, financial services, aerospace and defense, and energy production, with the country ranking among the world's top producers of both oil and natural gas. The US dollar also serves as the world's primary reserve currency, underpinning much of global trade and finance.

The United States is one of the world's largest trading nations, with major trading partners including Mexico, Canada, and China, and it participates in numerous regional and bilateral trade agreements, including the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which succeeded NAFTA in 2020. The economy faces ongoing structural debates over trade policy, income inequality, and the trajectory of federal fiscal deficits, alongside continued global leadership in innovation-driven sectors such as technology, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.
