Trinidad & Tobago: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Trinidad and Tobago has one of the most industrialized and highest-income economies in the Caribbean, built on substantial reserves of natural gas and petroleum that fuel a major petrochemical sector, including large-scale ammonia and methanol production. Energy exports account for the majority of the country's export earnings and government revenue, giving Trinidad and Tobago a significantly higher per-capita income than most of its Caribbean neighbors, alongside a gross domestic product estimated at roughly 28 billion US dollars.

The country's principal trading partners include the United States, other CARICOM member states, and various Latin American and European markets, with Trinidad and Tobago serving as a regional hub for petrochemical exports. Heavy reliance on hydrocarbon revenues has made the economy vulnerable to global energy price fluctuations, prompting ongoing government efforts to diversify into financial services, tourism, and light manufacturing, alongside continued investment in renewable energy and downstream energy industries.
