Paraguay is one of the few officially bilingual nation-states in the world: the 1992 constitution establishes both Spanish and Guarani as official languages. Guarani, an indigenous language predating European colonization, remains widely spoken across all social classes, unlike in most other Latin American countries where indigenous languages have receded. Roughly a third of Paraguayans use both Spanish and Guarani interchangeably, close to a third speak mainly Guarani, and the remainder rely primarily on Spanish, with Spanish understood by about nine in ten people as a first or second language. Beyond these two dominant languages, Paraguay is home to smaller indigenous communities belonging to several language families, including Mataco-Mataguayo, Zamuco, Lengua Maskoy, and Guaicuru, though these groups represent a small share of the national population.
Christianity dominates Paraguay's religious life, with Roman Catholicism as the majority faith, a legacy of Spanish colonization and centuries of missionary activity, including the influential Jesuit reducciones established among Guarani communities. Evangelical and other Protestant denominations have grown in recent decades and represent a meaningful minority. Alongside institutional Christianity, some indigenous communities maintain traditional belief systems and ritual practices, occasionally blended with Catholic observance in syncretic forms.
This linguistic and religious landscape sets Paraguay apart within the region. Guarani has become a central marker of Paraguayan national identity, reflecting the country's distinctive history of sustained contact and intermarriage between Spanish colonizers and indigenous populations. The country's 19 recognized indigenous peoples, though numerically small today, contribute to a cultural heritage that shapes Paraguay's self-image as a bilingual, mestizo nation, distinct from many of its neighbors where colonial languages more thoroughly displaced indigenous ones.
