Jamaica: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Jamaica has a mixed, services-driven economy, with tourism and remittances from the Jamaican diaspora serving as major sources of foreign exchange. Other important sectors include bauxite and alumina mining, agriculture, and manufacturing, though the country continues to work toward diversifying its economic base and reducing reliance on imported goods. The Jamaican Dollar is the national currency, and the country has pursued various fiscal reform programs in recent decades to manage public debt and stabilize growth.

As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Jamaica participates in regional trade arrangements and maintains trade relationships with the United States, the United Kingdom, and other Commonwealth and Caribbean partners. Agricultural exports such as coffee, particularly the internationally recognized Blue Mountain variety, along with sugar and other cash crops, remain culturally and economically significant even as the country's economy has grown increasingly service-oriented.
