Guyana: Foreign Relations

Guyana's foreign policy centers on defending its territorial sovereignty while pursuing close alignment with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on international votes and regional positions. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1966, Guyana has generally favored a cautious, legalistic diplomatic approach, relying on international law and multilateral institutions such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States to advance its interests. The discovery of substantial offshore oil reserves in the 2010s has since reshaped Guyana's international standing, drawing new attention from major powers and complicating its historically low-profile foreign relations.

Guyana's most consequential external relationship remains its long-running border dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo region, which comprises roughly two-thirds of Guyana's territory. Venezuela has claimed the area since before Guyana's independence, and tensions escalated sharply after Guyana began developing offshore oil fields near the disputed maritime boundary. Guyana brought the controversy before the International Court of Justice, and the two countries presented oral arguments on the merits of the case in May 2026. As of mid-2026, the court had not yet issued a final ruling, and Venezuela has indicated it may not recognize a judgment favoring Guyana's position, leaving the dispute unresolved.

Guyana has strengthened security and economic ties with the United States amid the standoff with Venezuela, including cooperation on counter-narcotics efforts and public expressions of U.S. support for Guyana's sovereignty. Guyana also maintains active diplomatic and trade relationships with the United Kingdom, Brazil, and other CARICOM members, while participating in regional bodies including the OAS and the Union of South American Nations.
