Ecuador: Traditions & Festivals

Inti Raymi, or the Festival of the Sun, is the most prominent traditional celebration among Ecuador's Indigenous Kichwa communities, observed each year around the June solstice to give thanks for the harvest to Inti, the Inca sun god. In towns across the northern highlands, especially Otavalo and Cotacachi, the festival opens with a ritual cleansing bath in a sacred river or waterfall, believed to purify participants and renew their connection to Pacha Mama, or Mother Earth. The following days bring street parades, traditional dances performed house to house, and shared meals of corn, potatoes, and chicha, a fermented corn beverage, with celebrations often continuing for one to two weeks.

Carnival, celebrated in February or March before Lent, is Ecuador's other major national festival and takes a distinctly local form: rather than elaborate costume parades, celebrants in many cities take to the streets with water balloons, foam sprays, and colored powders in playful, all-ages water fights. The city of Guaranda in the central highlands hosts one of the country's best-known Carnival celebrations, featuring the local pajaro azul liquor, parades, and traditional music. Coastal cities such as Guayaquil, meanwhile, combine the water play with elaborate floats and public dances.

Beyond these two signature events, Ecuador's festival calendar includes regional harvest festivals such as the Mama Negra celebration in Latacunga, which blends Indigenous, African, and Catholic influences into a procession of masked characters, and Corpus Christi celebrations in the highlands featuring the Danzantes, ornately costumed dancers who perform for days at a time. Together, these traditions reflect Ecuador's layered heritage of Indigenous Andean, African, and Spanish colonial influences.
