Ecuador's economy relies heavily on a narrow set of commodity exports, chief among them crude petroleum, farmed shrimp, and bananas, which together account for the bulk of the country's roughly 31 billion dollars in annual goods exports. As of 2023, the United States was Ecuador's leading export market, absorbing more than a quarter of total shipments, followed closely by China, whose purchases of Ecuadorian shrimp, bananas, and copper ore have grown substantially in recent years. Imports, valued at nearly 31 billion dollars, are dominated by refined petroleum products, machinery, and consumer goods, leaving the country's overall merchandise trade close to balanced.
On the import side, the United States and China are again Ecuador's two largest suppliers, together accounting for roughly half of everything the country buys from abroad, with Panama, Colombia, and Peru rounding out the top five sources as of 2023. This concentration on two dominant partners leaves Ecuador's trade exposed to shifts in demand from either market, particularly for petroleum, which remains the country's single largest export earner despite periodic swings in world oil prices.
Ecuador's formal trade framework centers on the Andean Community, a customs union it shares with Bolivia, Colombia, and Peru, as well as a free trade agreement with the European Union that took effect in 2017. Dollarization, adopted in 2000, removes currency risk from these relationships but also limits Ecuador's ability to cushion external price shocks through exchange-rate adjustment, making diversification of both export products and trading partners a recurring policy goal for the country's economic planners.
