Dominica: Culture and Society

Dominica has a population of roughly 73,000, primarily of African descent, with smaller Kalinago (Carib) and mixed-heritage communities. English is the official language, while Dominican Creole French, or Kwéyòl, remains widely spoken and reflects the island's period of French colonial influence. Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism, is the predominant religion.

Known as the "Nature Island" of the Caribbean, Dominica's culture is closely tied to its mountainous, forested landscape, with traditions in cuisine, music, and dance shaped by African, French, and Kalinago influences. The annual World Creole Music Festival celebrates this heritage, and the island maintains the largest surviving Kalinago population and Territory in the Caribbean, preserving Indigenous crafts, language elements, and communal traditions.
