Bolivia: Geography and Environment

Bolivia is a landlocked country divided between the Andean highlands in the west and Amazon basin lowlands in the east. The Altiplano, a high plateau shared with Peru, holds Lake Titicaca and the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, alongside the administrative capital La Paz, one of the highest capital cities in the world.

East of the Andes, the terrain descends into tropical lowlands and Amazon rainforest. Climate varies from cold, arid conditions across the highlands to humid tropical conditions in the lowlands.

Environmental priorities include glacier melt in the Andes affecting water supply, deforestation pressures in the Amazon lowlands, and the environmental footprint of lithium extraction from the salt flats, a resource of growing global interest.
