United States: Culture and Society

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

The United States has a population of roughly 335 million and is one of the most demographically diverse nations in the world, shaped by successive waves of immigration alongside its indigenous peoples and the enduring legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. English is the dominant language, though Spanish and numerous other languages are widely spoken, and the country's religious landscape is predominantly Christian while also encompassing significant Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, and religiously unaffiliated populations.

American culture has exerted significant global influence through film, television, music, and literature, with genres such as jazz, blues, rock and roll, and hip-hop originating in the United States and spreading worldwide. The country's cultural identity is often described through the lens of regional diversity, from the American South to New England to the Pacific Northwest, and through cultural touchstones such as Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and a strong tradition of sports including American football, baseball, and basketball.
