Paraguay: Politics and Governance

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Paraguay is a presidential republic with a bicameral Congress composed of a Chamber of Senators and a Chamber of Deputies. The president serves as both head of state and head of government, elected by direct popular vote, and the judiciary is headed by the Supreme Court of Justice.

Paraguay's political landscape has long been dominated by the Colorado Party, which has held the presidency for most of the period since the return to democracy in 1989. The country continues to address issues of corruption, land inequality, and institutional reform in its political discourse.
