Mexico's trade economy is built overwhelmingly around its two North American neighbors, with the United States functioning as by far its largest commercial partner. Roughly four out of every five dollars of Mexican exports head north across the border, a concentration made possible by decades of integrated manufacturing supply chains in the automotive, electronics, and machinery sectors. Imports are somewhat more diversified, with the United States and China together supplying well over half of the goods Mexico brings in from abroad.
The legal foundation for this relationship is the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and took effect in 2020. Under USMCA, most goods move among the three countries duty-free, provided they meet rules-of-origin requirements covering sectors such as automobiles. Beyond North America, Mexico has built one of the world's most extensive free-trade networks, with agreements covering more than 40 countries, giving the large majority of its trade preferential access under one pact or another.
As of mid-2026, USMCA's future is under active negotiation. The agreement's mandatory six-year joint review took place on July 1, 2026, and the United States declined at that session to confirm the agreement's optional 16-year extension, even as Mexico and Canada both supported renewal. The decision did not interrupt existing tariff preferences or trade flows, which continue under USMCA's terms through 2036, but it triggered a requirement for annual joint reviews and opened a period of bilateral negotiation between Mexico and the United States over issues including rules of origin and agricultural access.
