Jamaica: Trade Partnerships

by Strong Americas | Oct 3, 2026

Jamaica's trade relationships reflect the realities of a small, open Caribbean economy heavily oriented toward its largest neighbor to the north. As of 2026, the United States remains by far Jamaica's most important trading partner, accounting for roughly 40 percent of the island's total trade and absorbing the largest share of its exports. Geographic proximity, an English-speaking market, and decades of commercial ties have made the U.S. relationship central to Jamaican commerce, even as the country works to diversify its export base.

Jamaica's principal exports include bauxite and alumina, inorganic chemicals, rum and other beverages, and agricultural products such as coffee and yams, with the United States, the Netherlands, and Canada ranking among the top destinations. On the import side, Jamaica relies heavily on foreign fuel, machinery, food, and consumer goods, sourced chiefly from the United States, China, and fellow CARICOM members such as Trinidad and Tobago. This pattern produces a persistent and substantial trade deficit, with imports running several times the value of exports in most years, a gap the country offsets largely through tourism earnings and remittances rather than merchandise trade.

Regional integration shapes much of Jamaica's trade policy as well. The country has been a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) since the bloc's founding and joined the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as one of its pioneering participants in 2006, easing the movement of goods, services, and capital among member states. Jamaica also maintains longstanding commercial ties to the United Kingdom and Canada, legacies of its colonial and Commonwealth history, though these have been eclipsed in recent decades by the scale of trade with the United States.
