Dominica's trade reflects the realities of a small island economy: heavily import-dependent, with exports concentrated in a handful of niche products. As of 2023, the country's leading export markets were Iceland, Antigua and Barbuda, France, the United States, and Saint Lucia, while its principal sources of imports were the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, China, the United Kingdom, and Austria. Dominica imports far more than it exports, relying on shipments of refined fuel, machinery, and consumer goods to sustain an economy built around agriculture, tourism, and offshore financial services.
For much of the twentieth century, bananas dominated Dominica's export earnings, grown under preferential access to British and later European Union markets through the Lome and Cotonou trade agreements. That arrangement unraveled after a World Trade Organization ruling in the early 2000s forced the EU to phase out preferential banana quotas, prompting Dominica to diversify into crops such as coffee, aloe vera, and exotic fruit alongside a growing ecotourism sector and offshore banking and payment-processing industries.
Regional trade blocs remain central to Dominica's commercial ties. As a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Dominica trades relatively freely with neighboring islands such as Antigua and Barbuda and Saint Lucia, both regularly among its top export destinations. The Caribbean Basin Initiative (CBI) also grants many Dominican goods duty-free entry into the United States, which as of 2023 remained the island's single largest source of imports.
