Jamaica: Key Industries

by Strong Americas | Sep 25, 2026

Tourism anchors Jamaica's economy, generating more than half of the country's foreign exchange earnings and supporting roughly a quarter of all jobs. Resort areas such as Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril draw millions of visitors annually, and the sector's reach extends into transportation, retail, and hospitality-linked construction across the island.

Bauxite and alumina mining, developed since the mid-20th century, remains a major contributor to export earnings even though it represents a comparatively small share of overall output. As of 2026, the mining sector accounted for about 85 percent of Jamaica's traditional export earnings and roughly 2 percent of GDP, with major producers such as Windalco, Jamalco, and Atlantic Alumina continuing to invest in haulage infrastructure and capital upgrades despite disruption from Hurricane Melissa in 2025.

Agriculture, though a smaller share of the economy, remains an important export earner through sugar, bananas, and internationally recognized Blue Mountain coffee, alongside crops like yams and citrus grown largely for domestic consumption. As of 2024, services accounted for about 60 percent of GDP, industry roughly 18 percent, and agriculture close to 10 percent, with growth increasingly driven by newer service industries such as telecommunications and business process outsourcing, which employed more than 44,000 people in call centers and related operations that year.
