Belize: Key Industries

by Strong Americas | Sep 22, 2026

Belize's economy rests on a mix of services, agriculture, and light industry, with tourism serving as the country's leading foreign exchange earner. Tourism accounts for roughly 13 percent of GDP, and visitor arrivals have grown steadily in recent years, drawing on both mainland attractions and the barrier reef and cayes.

Agriculture remains a vital source of rural livelihoods and export earnings, led by sugar, along with citrus, bananas, and marine products such as shrimp and conch. Manufacturing and other industrial activity, including food processing and garment assembly, contribute a smaller but steady share of output, while financial services and logistics have grown alongside the broader services sector.

As of 2026, the United States and European markets, including the United Kingdom and Spain, remain Belize's principal export destinations, together accounting for the majority of the country's merchandise exports. Cane sugar is Belize's dominant export commodity by value, and the government has sought to diversify trade toward other Caribbean and regional markets even as traditional partners continue to dominate.
