Suriname's arts and media scene reflects the country's unusual ethnic diversity, blending Afro-Surinamese, Javanese, Hindustani, Amerindian, and Dutch influences into a distinctive Caribbean-South American hybrid. Music is central to this mix, especially kaseko, a Creole dance genre that fuses brass-band marches, jazz, calypso, and Afro-Surinamese kawina rhythms. Kaseko took shape in the 1930s and remains a staple of Surinamese popular culture, performed at festivals and celebrations alongside kawina, aleke, and other traditional forms.
Literature in Suriname developed later than in many neighboring countries, with written works emerging mainly from the late eighteenth century onward in Dutch, Sranantongo, and Hindi. Oral storytelling traditions, including folktales and heroic narratives passed down among the country's Maroon and Amerindian communities, remain an important complement to this written record. Visual arts and crafts, such as wood carving and textile work, are widely practiced and often draw on the symbolism of these same communities, while theater productions staged in Paramaribo frequently address contemporary social themes alongside Suriname's cultural pluralism.
Suriname's media sector is small but varied, encompassing Dutch-language and Sranantongo-language radio and television broadcasters, along with newspapers that serve the capital region where most of the population lives. State and private outlets operate alongside community stations that broadcast in Sarnami, Javanese, and other minority languages, reflecting the country's layered linguistic landscape. This multilingual media environment, paired with an active music and crafts scene, continues to shape how Surinamese culture is expressed and shared both domestically and among diaspora communities in the Netherlands.
