Dominica's most distinctive cultural expression is Mas Domnik, a carnival tradition widely regarded as one of the most original in the Caribbean because it has retained older folk customs that many neighboring islands' carnivals have shed in favor of imported calypso and steel-pan traditions. The celebration blends African and French influences with wider Caribbean and Indigenous customs, and its street parades feature stilt-walking Bwa Bwa figures and banana-leaf-clad Sensé masqueraders, both drawing on ancestral symbolism associated with protection and the warding off of evil spirits.
Music and dance carry the same layered heritage. Chanté mas, or masquerade song, is performed in a call-and-response style known as lavwé, led by a chantwèl who sings and dances backward in front of the drummers, while Lapo Kabwit bands supply the traditional goatskin-drum rhythms underlying the parade. Older forms such as bélé and quadrille dancing sit alongside calypso and the homegrown bouyon genre, which fuses cadence-lypso, soca, and traditional drumming into a style that has become one of Dominica's best-known musical exports.
Dominica's media sector is modest in scale and largely print- and radio-based. The island has been served by newspapers since 1765, and today weeklies such as The Chronicle, The Tropical Star, The Times, and The Sun cover national news alongside the online-only Dominica News Online. The Dominica Broadcasting Corporation operates the country's national radio service, complemented by several private stations, while no dedicated national television broadcaster exists; islanders instead rely on a privately run cable television network for local and international programming.
