Guatemala: Economy and Trade

Guatemala has the largest economy in Central America, with a diversified base that includes agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Coffee, sugar, bananas, and cardamom remain key agricultural exports, while the manufacturing sector encompasses textiles, food processing, and light industry. Remittances from Guatemalans living abroad, particularly in the United States, form a substantial share of national income and a critical support for many households.

The United States is Guatemala's largest trading partner, and the country participates in the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR), which facilitates trade in goods and services across the region. Guatemala also trades actively with other Central American nations and with Mexico, exporting agricultural products and light manufactured goods while importing machinery, fuel, and consumer goods.
