Grenada: Politics and Governance

Grenada is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy within the Commonwealth, with the British monarch serving as head of state, represented locally by a Governor-General, while a Prime Minister leads the government as head of the majority party in Parliament. The bicameral Parliament consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate, and the judiciary operates within the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court system.

Since the restoration of parliamentary democracy following the 1983 crisis and US-led intervention, Grenada has maintained stable, peaceful transfers of power between its two main political parties, the New National Party and the National Democratic Congress. The country participates actively in regional cooperation through CARICOM and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, and its foreign policy generally emphasizes economic development and disaster resilience given its vulnerability to hurricanes.
