Chile: History

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Prior to Spanish arrival, the territory now known as Chile was home to diverse indigenous peoples including the Mapuche in the south-central region, who successfully resisted full incorporation into the Inca Empire and later mounted centuries of resistance against Spanish colonization.

Spanish colonization began in the 1540s, establishing Santiago as a colonial capital, though the Arauco War against Mapuche resistance continued for over two centuries. Chile declared independence from Spain in 1810, with independence formally consolidated by 1818 under Bernardo O'Higgins.

The 20th century brought periods of democratic government interrupted by the 1973 military coup that installed the Pinochet dictatorship, followed by a return to democracy in 1990 and subsequent decades of economic growth alongside ongoing debates over inequality and constitutional reform.
