Barbados: Economy and Trade

by Strong Americas | Jul 16, 2026

Barbados has one of the most developed and diversified economies in the Eastern Caribbean, driven primarily by tourism, international financial services, and a growing information technology sector. The island's sugar industry, once the backbone of its economy, has declined substantially, though rum production remains an important export and cultural product.

The Barbadian dollar is pegged to the US dollar, providing monetary stability. Barbados has cultivated a reputation as an offshore financial hub with a network of double-taxation treaties, and it maintains one of the highest standards of living in the Caribbean region. The country trades extensively with the United States, the United Kingdom, and other CARICOM members, though it remains vulnerable to global economic shifts and climate-related risks given its small, open economy.
