Barbados: Trade Partnerships

by Strong Americas | Sep 28, 2026

Barbados operates as a small, trade-dependent open economy whose external commerce is shaped by a combination of strong bilateral ties to North America and deep integration into regional and international trading arrangements. As of 2026, the United States remains Barbados' single largest trading partner, supplying roughly a third to two-fifths of the island's imports, including machinery, fuel, and food products, while also ranking among its principal export markets.

Regional trade carries particular weight for Barbados. As a founding member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its Single Market and Economy, Barbados exports a meaningful share of its goods, including rum, chemicals, and processed foods, to neighboring CARICOM economies such as Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, and Guyana, which rank among its most significant markets after the United States. Barbados also belongs to CARIFORUM, the wider Caribbean grouping that concluded an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with the European Union in 2008, giving Barbadian exporters preferential access to European markets.

Barbados has been a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) since the organization's founding on January 1, 1995, and it coordinates much of its external trade policy through CARICOM's common external tariff framework. Additional trade ties connect Barbados to the United Kingdom, a legacy of its colonial-era commercial relationships and continuing Commonwealth membership, and increasingly to China, which has become a growing source of imported manufactured goods. This layered approach, combining bilateral ties with regional and multilateral trade structures, reflects a common strategy among small Caribbean economies seeking market access they could not easily negotiate alone.
