Panama's economy is among the most services-oriented in Latin America, with commerce, transportation, logistics, and financial services together accounting for most national output. This structure developed around the country's central geographic asset, the isthmus connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which enabled the Panama Canal and a wider network of maritime and trade industries to become the backbone of the modern economy. As of 2025, the World Bank identified trade, transport, logistics, and financial services as the primary drivers of Panama's economic growth, which reached 4.4 percent that year.
The Panama Canal, completed in 1914 and expanded with a third set of locks in 2016, remains the country's signature infrastructure asset and a major source of government revenue through tolls on transiting vessels. According to the Panama Canal Authority, the canal recorded 13,404 vessel transits and generated approximately 5.7 billion dollars in revenue during fiscal year 2025, an increase attributed to rising cargo traffic after prior drought-related restrictions. Near the canal's Atlantic entrance, the Colon Free Trade Zone, established in 1948, has long been described as the largest free port in the Americas and one of the largest in the world; as of 2025 it continued to serve as a re-export hub linking Asian and European suppliers with Latin American and Caribbean markets.
Panama has also developed into a regional banking center, hosting international banks that benefit from its dollarized economy and long-standing absence of a central bank issuing independent currency. Tourism, construction, and agriculture round out the economy: tourism draws visitors to the canal, Panama City, and coastal areas; construction has grown with urban expansion; and agriculture, a smaller share of output, remains a livelihood for many rural Panamanians. Together, these industries reflect an economy organized around Panama's position as a global crossroads for trade, transit, and finance.
