Haitian visual art is known for vivid color, expressive design, and a distinctive naive style that reflects the country's African, European, and Taino heritage. This tradition gained international recognition in the mid-1940s after the Centre d'Art opened in Port-au-Prince, providing local painters a platform to develop and exhibit work centered on market scenes, lush landscapes, and religious ritual. The coastal town of Jacmel remains a center of this creative output today, with murals and canvases displayed throughout its streets and galleries.
Music runs through daily life in Haiti, with kompa, a modern meringue-derived genre, and rara, a form of street parading that blends carnival and religious elements, providing much of the country's popular soundtrack. Drumming carries particular cultural weight, reflecting West African rhythmic traditions that have persisted and evolved since colonial times. These musical forms often accompany festivals, processions, and community gatherings, linking performance closely to social and spiritual life.
Haitian literature was written almost exclusively in French until the twentieth century, when writers such as Jean Price-Mars and Jacques Roumain began drawing more directly on national folk culture; Roumain's 1944 novel Gouverneurs de la Rosee, published posthumously in 1947, is widely regarded as a classic of the period. Later in the century, Felix Morisseau-Leroy helped pioneer the use of Haitian Creole in literature and theater, expanding the language's reach beyond spoken use into formal artistic expression. Together these movements reflect a literary tradition shaped by the country's layered French, West African, and Taino influences.
