Grenada: Foreign Relations

by Strong Americas | Sep 1, 2026

Grenada is a small island state that maintains diplomatic relations across the Americas and beyond, holding membership in the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the Caribbean Community, and the Commonwealth of Nations. As a former British colony that gained independence in 1974, Grenada retains close ties to the United Kingdom while building an increasingly active foreign policy during the government of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.

As of 2026, China is among Grenada's most significant development partners. The two countries marked the 21st anniversary of their resumed diplomatic relations in January 2026, when Prime Minister Mitchell visited Beijing and signed more than a dozen agreements and memoranda of understanding covering infrastructure and other cooperation. Grenada also maintains a working relationship with the United States, which supports Grenadian initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, climate resilience, and energy reform, alongside cooperation on countering transnational organized crime and illicit firearms trafficking.

Within the Caribbean Community, Grenada has taken an active leadership role, with Mitchell participating in the bloc's February 2026 heads-of-government conference and having previously chaired the organization. His government has also pursued deeper ties with other regional partners, including Canada, with which Grenada discussed expanding cooperation on trade, security, and energy in mid-2026. This pattern of frequent international engagement has made Grenada, despite its small size, one of the more diplomatically visible states in the Eastern Caribbean.
